RE: Food for thought

It's true that there are many tonearm choices at various price levels and that available decks are few at lower prices. I think there are more higher-cost armless turntables available because:

1) at that market level, purchasers are more likely to want to specify a particular arm that suits their needs.

2) many purchasers of higher-priced decks start off with a low-cost arm for budgetary reasons, moving on to the higher-priced arm they really want when their finances have recovered. For example, when I bought my Ace Spacedeck 5 years ago (priced at 1200 UKP at the time), I had my dealer fit the arm from off my old turntable.

I did something similar back in the '80s, when I bought a Systemdek with the cheapest possible Linn Basik arm, which kept the package just within my budget. Many buyers of the Linn LP12 did the same.
