My dad's turntable was a Philips 212 which he used with a Shure M91 and (for special records!) a Stanton 681EE. It still works perfectly! The only problem was the silly headshell design which often made imperfect contact with the contacts in the arm so one got used to the ritual of pulling the headhshell on and off multiple times when the hum started....
BTW is the arm head parallel to the platter on your Philips? Ours is rotated about 6 degrees. It worked perfectly with the Stanton styli which had similarly huge azimuth errors from the 90s...... :-S
