Something like that has happened to me more than once, but no damage ever resulted. One reason for that, I think, is that the force applied when the stylus hits the mat, or whatever it hits, is in the same direction as the stylus drag force, which the cartridge is built to resist. I fear sideways 90 degree angle hits on the cantilever more.
