I've designed and built all the shelving in my studio. I've settled on 1/2" plywood with a 1/8" hardwood backing as best use of materials while providing very rigid and strong shelves. If you have access to a high quality table saw this is a good way to go:
Perfectly square and accurate cuts are essential.
Dado joints, cut with the table saw
Assembled with wood glue, a pneumatic brad nailer, long bar clamps as needed, and a big hammer to square things up if required.
Finished with semi-gloss white paint
Shelving for 10" 78 RPM discs
