This LP set is indeed excellent; my copy was second-hand but in good condition. The Lubeck Cathedral recording (CD) is very fine as a performance, but a cathedral acoustic is indeed not ideal.

The only Wand Bruckner 8 I can think of that betters that Cologne performance, in my memory at least, is the 1992 BBC SO performance at the Proms. The utter tension and the drive in that from beginning to end was something special. It's probable there's a bootleg recording of the broadcast out there somewhere.

I also have two of Haitink's Bruckner 8 LP recordings and, again, find them very good but cannot forget his two performances with the student orchestra of the Royal College of Music a couple of years ago.

We're spoilt in London!
