Look for works by Willie Ruff. He recorded usually with pianist Dwike Mitchell, as the "Mitchell-Ruff" duo. They were based in New Haven, CT, when I was a kid in high school. They did an album with Dizzie that is to die for. Ruff was (or possibly still is) a very cultured and erudite man, educated I think at Julliard. At some point, he lived in France for a while, as many did. He ended up as a professor in the Music Department at Yale. He wrote a book about his experience as a jazz musician not too many years ago. He played a great bass, as well, but I love his work on French horn. One of a kind.
