Groove damage can be seen if you hold the disc at right angles to bright light
moving it back and forth a few degrees and the groove damage will show as
a rather subtle dull whitish, greyish or greenish sheen, it takes a little experience but once you see it you'll understand.
Much of the readily apparent commonplace scuffing and light surface scratches are generally inaudible.
BTW much of the scuffing is the result of cheap acid paper sleeves which are surprisingly abrasive it's never a bad idea to replace the typical paper sleeves with poly lined or Rice paper sleeves, the nasty old sleeves also contribute considerable dust as the sleeve slowly disintegrates and that dust is also abrasive, hard on your vinyl and styli as well.
