Both work.

I use an oil well bearing because I want to introduce dynamic drag into the system. That's a good place to do it where it can be controlled.

Other makers like inverted bearings, and they work well in cases where the motor doesn't particularly benefit from dynamic drag.

Properly designed bearings of either flavor work well, and poorly designed ones of either flavor do not.

So, the answer to your question is that it varies.
