I have a pair of Stax driven by its tube headphone amp, I enjoy listening to it no less than the speaker system. Surface noise can get louder and usually we don't get as much big soundstage and depth as the speakers can render, but I was always fascinated by the speed, the transient and the clear instrument tone out of the headphone. With the headphone, there is no speaker-room interaction to deal with, you don't worry about your speakers not well positioned, the wall not carefully treated, the room too big or too small, you can always get a reasonably good sound, providing that you've got a reasonably good headphone.
For me, the biggest advantage is that whenever I want to treat myself with a Stravinsky riot, a Wagner ride in the sky, or simply a good appreciation of Pink Floyd's threatening aircraft, I can have it without putting the volume down if it's late at night. Callas's mad scenes at 6AM Sunday? No problem, put the needle down.
There will be something that are either good or bad. You'll hear more groove noise, more turntable or tone arm problems, so it could act as a serious checkup of your vinyl playback ability. Not all people like to find out that they have a rumble that wasn't noticeable before.
