Welcome Licorice Pizza (LP) lovers! Setup guides and Vinyl FAQ.

They were both tables from 1976

I have owned and used the DP-6000, DP-7000, DP-80, DP-75, DP-100, DP-100M (and the DP-3000, DP-2000, and a few others).

The DP-6000 and DP-7000 were the two "top of the line" TT motors (the turntable sets (including arm and plinth) were called the DP-6700 and DP-7700) both introduced in 1976 (the DP-7000 was actually brought on to the local market 3mos earlier), which IIRC was the same year the Technics SP-10Mk2 was introduced. The DP-7000 was the "piss off" top of the line whereas the DP-6000 was the everyman's top of the line table.

The DP-6000, at introduction was 73,000 yen. The DP-7000 - the same year - was 130,0000. The TTs (same DA-307 arm and similar plinth) were 140,000 vs 198,000 yen.

The commonly-known turntable - and the workhorse sold to pros - was the DP-6000. The DP-7000 was more accurate in terms of specs. Speed accuracy of the DP-6000 was +/- 0.002%. For the DP-7000 it was +/- 0.001%, perhaps because the pulse measurement of the strips on the side of the rim were twice as frequent for the DP-7000 as for the DP-6000.

The DP-7000 has a 2-phase motor which has the two phases offset by 90 degrees. The DP-6000 has a single phase AC PWM circuit.

The DP-7000 had lower rumble (-77dB on DIN-B standard compared to -75dB for the DP-6000).

The DP-7000 had a better/bigger power supply and the motor unit was heavier (i.e. more copper I believe) despite having exactly the same platter structure.

The electronics were slightly different. Diagrams are below:

The DP-6000 is

If I were to find both at the same price, I would choose the DP-7000 any day of the week. If it were a choice between a DP-7000 and a DP-80, I would choose the DP-80. I would likely choose the DP-75 over the DP-7000 as well. The DP-6700 and the DP-7700 done with the leather covered plinth are fantastic examples of 1970s kitsch design.
