In Reply to: anyone else find a 70's turntable which outperforms a modern perspex glomor rig? posted by ppopp on November 25, 2013 at 23:54:48:
I've never owned a modern perspex high end TT. But i once had a ca. 1000 euro Rega P25 on loan from the local hifi shop. I took it back after a week, i was not impressed both in terms of sound and build quality.
I'm a 100% vintage guy, i still visit all the thrift shops and flea markets in my area. Sometimes i still find good amps, just scored a vintage Akai with a wooden case. After cleaning up a very nice sounding amp with good phono part.
I hardly ever see a good 70's TT anymore in the thrifts. Online there is less supply and the prices have gone up. Sellers want 200 euro for a Thorens TD160 with the heavy arm. There are still vintage TT's flying under the radar so to speak, Akai AP 206/207, Philips 800 series, Pioneer Pl-12D, Technics SQ DD, Dual 500 series.
Clean them up, fix them up, set them up correctly with a good MM cartridge plus a new original stylus. Place the TT correctly. (pre)amplification is important. Ans last but not least: the software, the record itself.
