"Paramount Wonder Cabinet" - photos

I've been buying a series of pre-war Blues reissue LPs from Third Man Records for the past few months and have been very impressed with the music, the quality of the transfers, and the vinyl/packaging. So, when Third Man Records and Revenant Records joined forces to offer a special "Paramount Wonder Cabinet", I ordered it on October 29, the day it was released.

Fed-Ex delivered it this morning. I invited my wife to look on as I opened the box. (She had no idea I'd ordered it). Her response was "Merry Christmas."

I'll preface my remarks by saying that words can't fully describe this package and my photos are woefully inadequate in capturing the beauty and detail of these items. The outer case is constructed of quarter sawn oak, stained a dark color and finished in lacquer. It's modeled after the old time Victrola style wind-up player cabinets. Antique finish brass corners, hinges, latch, and badges complement the fine woodwork. Inside the case are two small booklets, two large books, a folio containing six LPs, and a USB drive.

The overall package is a work of art with no detail overlooked or lacking in any way. It's not inexpensive ($400) but for what it is, it's clearly a labor of love on the part of Third Man Records. The aroma of fine wood and lacquer is still lingering in my studio as I look at what will be a truly special "gem" in my collection.

The sturdy oak case. Functional and beautiful at the same time.

The brass badge, on the exterior of the case.

The interior of the case is velvet lined, with space to accommodate the various contents.

Six beautiful colored vinyl LPs with gold foil labels, in an elegantly designed folio.

The birch LP folio is a work of art. The photo fails to really show the intricate laser-cut detail and fine workmanship. It has to be seen to be appreciated.

Slip off the small 'tailpiece' and this is revealed to be a USB drive. It contains 800 digital song files, custom playback software, and extensive JPG files, mainly reproductions of Paramount ads and posters.

From left, clockwise: The birch LP folio, the light blue 360 page "Field Manual" containing bios and discographies for nearly 200 artists, The big red "Rise And Fall" book, and two smaller booklets.

The two smaller booklets are printed on newsprint, and contain a wealth of information on the artists and record releases.

The large red "rise and fall" book is a work of art. Expensive printing techniques are used and it's lavishly illustrated with many wide fold-out pages like this, reproductions of old advertising and promotional material.

There's some nice photos on the Third Man website and further details, check it out.
