I've bought dozens of LPs from him, and have never been disappointed. Look at the intro to his last catalog for how he grades. His description of noise levels is very specific, which helps.
With vinyl, you have to at least some of it to get the general noise level, and use your eyes to see if there are specific problems somewhere. Here is how he describes his method:
"Grading used records is difficult since a subjective element is always present and variations in equipment will cause differences in sound. My method: each disc is examined visually to note marks which may be audible. Such defects are auditioned and, in any case, each record is spot-checked in several places on both sides for surface noise and other defects which are not visible."
