Wow.Ok, so just to be clear, at no point was I suggesting that setting up a cartridge so that the arm (and by extension, the top surface of the cartridge body) is parallel to the record's surface will automatically achieve optimal VTA. Indeed, I didn't offer any advice at all on how anyone should go about the business of setting up their cartridge - I wouldn't presume to be so patronising.
I had thought it was a given that anyone frequenting a forum such as this would be fine tuning/confirming their VTA by ear. But, as most cartridge manufacturers recommend a parallel setup, it at least serves as a useful and repeatable starting point.
As someone who finds judging parallel surfaces by eye difficult, I was simply passing on what I thought was a neat little tip that had made finding that starting point a little less arduous.
