it may be picked up by the stylus and upward into the innards of a cartridge...not good!
Granted, the chance is small but why take the risk. Overdrying the LP is the most obvious reason for static build-up.
A light spritz of distilled water on the LP, use the carbon brush and the problem(s) should be eliminated.
Using Static Guard on the floor in front of the table (where your feet are) and even onto the rack (NO overspray!), will be helpful, too.
