I'm going by memory here, having had three original Merc's pass though the household before going to Ebay; 2 RFR's and one M2.
I *don't* recall any of the originals being impressive in the areas of transparency, hall interaction, and piano "bloom," but the Japanese pressing indeed is eyebrow-raising in those respects. Most remarkable was the increased fullness and transparency in the final couple of minutes of the Finale which contains some pretty staccato, (brittle) high piano writing and high unison strings. Even the Piccolo retains its roundness right before the run-out grooves.
I'm impressed. If only I liked Janis....
