Not necessarily.
I've done thousands of transfers, of both customer-provided records & tapes and my own personal work.
When doing transfers, playback quality is critical. An off-speed turntable or tape deck with excessive wow & flutter will create compromised files. So yes, in that scenario, the results will be "inferior."
However, assuming top quality playback, a good ADC, and skilled technique, the results can be virtually indistinguishable from the original.
Transferring to WAV also provides the opportunity for audio restoration. I've taken more than a few "VG" albums and have created "NM" audio files simply by careful use of Click Repair software. In that respect, the copy can often be superior.
