I find the sound here to be characteristic of a lot of T Bone Burnett productions. The overall sound is similar to Plant and Krauss's "Raising Sand" which he also produced. Fat, warm and slow in the badd, mid-rangey, and soft on top with very subdued or sparing use of cymbals, lots of organic woody sounding percussion that invite the listener to relax and chill out. The strings provide most of the excitement in the treble region. I think this kind of mix lets Allman's (Plant, Krauss) voice to come out front a bit, and overall the sound of this album establishes a warm groove that works OK for me.
