How did you skew VTA on the tonearm of a 2.2, "to the point where the needle was visually angled in toward the center of the turntable". That sounds like you have really screwed up the cartridge alignment. If the stylus is really sideways, it may help this sibilance because sideways, the stylus is probably more like a ball point pen than a proper sylus, and it is not getting down in the groove.
