RE: What Makes You Think He's Trolling?

Hi Elix,

OK, I may have been a bit harsh on the folks who love their mono cartridges. I kind of like my RPX too.

Here is the deal. If folks want to say my XYZ mono cartridge sounds better to me on my mono records than my ABC stereo cartridge, I would be the last to disagree. All cartridges have a bit of their own sound and we are all individuals each with our own taste.

What some of the folks were suggesting however is that a stereo cartridge and it's associated equipment no matter how connected can not suppress signals resulting from vertical motion of the stylus or at least not as well as a "true" mono cartridge. Now this is something which can be empirically measured. With my system I can put an Edison Diamond disc under my Shure M44 body with N44-3 stylus and switch from stereo playback, lateral mono playback, and vertical playback rapidly with the throwing of some switches. If I attempt to play an Edison in the lateral mono mode it will be very faint and distorted and when I switch to vertical the volume jumps up about what seems 20 dB. If I play a lateral cut record (78 or Lp) and perform the same test the result is analogous.

Now when someone denies the empirical observations of me and other people, I tend to put him in the group with folks who might tell me that the Earth is flat and is supported on the backs of four giant tortoises.

Phil
