with your knuckle, you will hear what I mean. The stylus in the groove causes a resonance in the vinyl which is transferred to the platter. A heavy or well damped mat prevents or reduces the resonance reaching the platter and also damps that resonance from coming back into the vinyl. This resonance can smear imaging and reduce low level detail. For the light alloy platter on the Denon, I'd use one of the thicker Herbies mats or just stick with the heavy rubber mat that came with the Denon, which is what I did.
I use Herbies mats on my Thorens TD-150 and Technics SL-150.
