20,000 Great Ones

How are we defining "average stuff" and "great ones?" If average stuff means common dollar bin records, are not some of those records great? I'm sure some of my "great" records (Punk, Metal, Avant Garde, Rap, Opera, etc....) would be considered crap by some fellow collectors. Just as I'd view their "great" Soft Rock and Smooth Jazz LPs as tiresome dreck. Very much a matter of personal taste is it not?

The original poster mentions LPs, are we ignoring 45s & 78s?

I own approximately 12,000 LPs, 7,000 78s and 4,000 45s. About 75% are in Near Mint condition. If they're on my shelf it's because I like the music, or in some cases the LP cover art. That's enough reason to qualify them as "great ones." In forty years of collecting, I've passed on countless hundreds of thousands of records so the ones I do have are special.

I'd rather have 20,000 great ones than 2,000 great ones. I have plenty of space for what I've got and room for more that I might acquire. I can easily spin 100+ records per week so it's not like I have that 'never listen to them all' problem. I'm 55 years old with many more years of listening to look forward to.
