RE: there was a character in a novel who..........

.....had an OCD compulsion to own every record.
At least that is how he said it. Perhaps he meant a pressing of every catalog number by every known label. I suppose that that would be a quantity that could be estimated.

However at the time in the novel the character admitted to owning twenty-three thousand, eight hundred and fifty-two.

I would not be critical of someone who professed the above ambition. But it is not me. For myself, I want my collection/library to reflect my personal taste as well as the taste of fellow listeners who visit. So I can be comfortable with a much smaller number and feel no need to expand beyond into music which does not interest me.

So my collection is the result of my musical interests. If I want to explore a particular classical composer, I'll collect different performances of the various pieces that apply. For instance, my collection of Mahler has been growing. But now having listened to several different performances of the same symphonies, I tend to get a sense of that music. Also, there is a sense of the very different recording qualities from one label to another.

Also, I --would-- be critical of someone who just went to thrift stores and bought up everything in sight. That's too easy. The challenge is to find specific titles in VG+ or better condition. Less than VG+ doesn't count unless it is a very collectable pressing.

fwiw / my 2c, those are my rules.

Btw, the character with the 23,852 records was leon Tubin in the novel "The Music Lovers" by J. Valin, (A Harry Stoner novel.) Good fast reading for people who dig vinyl. isbn 0-440-21686-9
