Oh yes! The way Steve integrated the passive RIAA with the tubed/shunt power supply a la Allen Wright makes for tone and texture you just don't get with solid state or conventional tube power supplies. My rig: passive attenuator/no-pre, DHT direct-coupled single-ended para-feed amp and hi-efficiency horn/BR speakers is all about tone and texture.
