I had a problem that I would also describe as a static or sibilant sound that occured with certain (always the same) loud, passages on my LPs. I assumed for the longest time that the records were to blame - bad pressings. Turned out to be a bad speaker.
If you think your problem might be *one* of your speakers, you can test that. Listen with your balance set to mute one speaker at a time. See if one speaker only produces "static."
Further, if there is static, turn off your stereo then switch the turntable input leads (switch left-right channel rca leads). If the same speaker again produces static sounds from the new channel, it may be bad.
If you get static from an input source other than the turntable (CD, tape, second table as source) then that would add evidence to the bad speaker theory.

PS - My brother gave me one of his Cambridge Soundworks speakers to replace my bad Soundworks speaker. I'm happier now.
