RE: Reasons for distorted sibilance?

As has been suggested by other posters, there can be a number of items that cause this phenomenon. Some speakers are hot and tizzy and will exaggerate these effects. Some electronics do so as well. It may have something to do with your turntable/cartridge/alignment, but it may not. And, as has been said, there is a wide range of sibilance on recordings--evidenced by your original observation "on some recordings". This can be bad miking, bad mixing, careless pressings, overloading levels causing distortion, etc. Do no automatically assume it is your turntable/cartridge/alignment. It could be, but not nesessarily. Fortunately tweaking your cartridge parameters is inexpensive and can be fun and educational if you are not too fumble-fingered and exercise some patience. I would also urge that you not base your tracking pressure on what someone else does with his/her cartridge. Start with what the cartridge mfg. suggests, which is often a range of weights, and experiment with care.

Good luck,

George

If you have a friend with some nice analog gear, you might try to arrange to listen to the most offensive recordings on another system.
