I had the pleasure to build the Gary Pimm design. It has enough gain to run my Denon 103D MC cartridge with no SUT and a slight ampount of tube wash noise. It doesn't better my Thorsten Loesch LCR phono stage but it's no slouch. It can easily handle with a great amount of volume down to 1MV output cartridge. Lower than that I do suggest an SUT but as I said, The Denon is .25MV and it plays loud enough in my room.
I built mine using a different power supply but other than the supply the rest is done right to the letter and it is quiet.
I will post pictures of mine once I get a nice base for it made. Should be within the week.
