Although this may be a little off the track, I would be interested in hearing people's thoughts on what we mean when we say vinyl (as opposed to "analog") soulds better than CDs (as opposed to "digital"). I think some people see the terms "vinyl" and "analog" as being synonymous, when they are not.I actually have a number of records from the mid-1980s that were pressed from digital recordings and sound very nice (for example, Horowitz in Moscow). Some of the new vinyl releases are also digitally recorded and mastered, and I think they sound better on my system than their CD counterparts (I have a Rega Planar 3 with Grado Silver and I have a Rotel RCD 971). The playback medium seems to be far more important than the recording and mastering method. So, we really don't necessarily mean "analog" vs. "digital" in the LP vs. CD debate.
Do you agree or disagree that an excellent digital recording on vinyl can sound as good as an excellent analog recording on vinyl? If not, do you still agree that an excellent recording, regardless of the method, on vinyl, will ALWAYS sound better than an excellent recording, regardless of the method, on CD (assuming a highend analog TT)?
