Now for a very different stand/rack DIY method...

I've been mentioning my DIY speaker stand and rack projects, but I know that one picture is worth a couple of thousand web posts. Here are some URLs if you're interested.

First, I use 3/4" copper plumbing pipes and fittings. They're a simple cut and paste job with a $3 tool and 5 minute epoxy. If you measure carefully you can't go too wrong. This makes for a rigid structure and there are as many configurations of this method as your imagination permits. Fittings come in limited shapes, so that's where the creativity comes in. I use 1/2" "stub out" ends for mock cones these days, but started with epoxied brass washer/acorn nut devices. Both work well. 3/4" is relatively inexpensive (fittings are costly in pipes) and sufficiently sturdy. I like the copper look in my room and so have all our friends, male and female. You can fill with the substance of your preference.

There is a pic of my speaker stand, which is 30" tall and supports a 7 lb. bookshelf speaker. The top plate is a simple saltillo tile. You can see the "dead ball" suspension configuration in this second pic, at least the external view of the cap over ball over open T fitting config.

YOu can see a similar structure in the rack pix, except that there I use different isolation/coupling devices. DIYumas (thanks, Jose!) under the shelves, and sometimes superballs; my own design DIY roller balls with dead balls under the component chassis. There is a pic of the stub out mock cones. I'm using 16" square tile as shelves while I construct (or destroy) symposium shelf clones I'm making.

There's also a pic of my DIY cable elevators. Chopstick rest epoxied to teacup, filled with kitty litter or sand, epoxied to ramekin (all porcelain), neoprene pad on bottom, glooped silicone rubber on top. Works very well. Spray with anti-static stuff from your laundry monthly too.

Let me know what you think.
