Results from changing Phillips 963sa main ps with Blackgate

205.188.208.9

Being a rookie at modding,I did a lot of research on changing the main 150uf 200v ps cap on my 963sa with a BG 150uf 350v cap.

Opinions vary, but the general opinion of most was that a swithcing ps would not benifit from a ps cap upgrade much, if at all,not to mention some have had problems whith there players operating correctly when changing the values of there swithching ps caps.

I am planning on doing mods to all signal paths, superclock 2 ect eventually and I thought I would start with the ps.
I am very happy with the results as the inner detail, bass impact, soundstage width and depth are much improved,so much so that it is hard to believe that a 23.00 cap on a switching ps,can make such a drastic change for the better.
I do not have any idea what brand the el cheapo cap was that was replaced, but the other Rubycon caps on the swithching ps board seem to like there rich cousins presense.

I had previously damped the entire interior, added a large bybee on the positive only of the mains, and added an audience pc,all of which made the 963 much better sounding than stock.
I would rate the benifits gained from the changing the main ps cap to the BG cap as equal to,if not superior to all previous mods.

BTW...I found the stock 963sa to better my previous Sony 9000es in all respects except of course build quality.
I also find that being a rookie at this, the 963sa is a bit less intimidating to mod, not to mention, alot cheaper to replace then the 9000 es if I mess up.
While I have no idea about other switching ps's,this one benifits greatly with the change to the BG cap of the same value and I have had zero operational problems with the player after a weeks time..
