Help with Behringer UC Xmas present

Please help me with frustration and disappointment over a new 8024 UC with digital board.
Have installed it between CD transport and DAC. Cabling is BNC to XLR (transport to UC) XLR to BNC (UC to DAC). Have followed lots of advice to get the cables matched.
Right - If I link the two cables together, totally bypassing the UC then the CD plays perfectly.
BUT if I plug them in the UC (powered up) and hit the IN/OUT button nothing happens. When this button is OUT surely this should be the same as bypassing the UC as I did with the cables. Have looked through all the menus. Am I missing something?
