Multicore's Ersin 362/SN-62 Silver Solder/5-core.

Gentlemen:

Lately, I've been doing a little bit of net research on solders. Since it has been mentioned repeatedly on AA.com, I focused last night on Multicore's Ersin 362, esp. on SN-62!

Here's what I found: Ersin 362 is Multicore's best selling solder. This tin and lead silver-solder has been on the market for 45 years! And it helped Multicore's growth with those 5 unique, rosin-flux cores it comes with. They are kind of interesting, if you ask me. And they do make for a nice, readily identifiable, Multicore logo!

Here's a few details: Ersin 362 does not have a plastic stage like regular 60/40 solder. At 354.2 degrees F or 179 degrees C, it passes quickly from solidus to liquidus (or vice-versa). There's simply "no plastic play" in there. Now, its lead content is 36.5%, while its rosin content is 3.5% There is no mention of the of the percentage of silver! It seems to be a closely guarded secret.

Any health problems or concerns here? Yes and no! Previous posters at AA.com have shown a concern about inhaling lead fumes while soldering. It's true, lead is extremely toxic! However, Multicore's tech page warns of this danger as you go over 934 degrees F or 500 degrees C! At that point, lead dust, fumes and vapors are created! Even with my powerful Hakko-937 Digital Soldering Station (60 watts), I can only reach 896 degrees F or 480 degrees C. Thus, when you are melting lead, the lead stays at the joint! It doesn't affect your health in any way! Rosin, on the other hand, does affect you--it vaporises readily! So you have to be careful with the solder's 3.5% of rosin. That's where your health concerns should be directed! What to do? Well, always work in a well ventilated area, one that extracts those fumes to the outside!

I have linked Multicore.com's netsite at the bottom of this page. This is a huge site! So right after this paragraph, I'm giving you an easy guide to get to Ersin 362's SN-62, the solder that concerns us. I'm doing this to save you from getting lost and frustrated. Believe me, it can happen!

Main Page: Click on "Hand Soldering and Rework."
At "Hand Soldering" pick "Solder Wire."
At "Solder Wire" click on "Rosin."
At "Rosin" click on Ersin 362!

Don't forget to look at Ersin 362's tech page! It has a lot of useful information on SN-62! It also has a lot of health related information, including rosin-vapor intoxication! It is, thus, very important!

After you take this Multicore SN-62 tour, make some comments on the thread. I'd love to hear what you have to say on Ersin 362 or any other solder that you prefer. Thorsten are you game? Any others?

Merry Christmas to all of you! May all your wishes come true in the year 2000!

Regards,
Gariver
