Tweakers' Asylum Tweaks for systems, rooms and Do It Yourself (DIY) help. FAQ. |

I was thinking of building a small bookshelf speaker, with a
4 to 6 inch full-range, perhaps with or without a tweeter for
6KHz and higher. Efficiency of 90dB+ would be nice... I'm
planning to drive them using Linsley Hood's vintage Class A
amp (15w RMS/ch).Should I go for one of the Fostex units, or a Jordan JX92S? (I
noticed someone has just won a DIY speaker competition using a
single-driver JX92S bookshelf... it was mentioned in Melhuish
single-driver Website.)Any comments would be very helpful. Does a well-designed small
vented box with a Fostex driver costing perhaps USD 50 give a
sound comparable to top-end speakers? I want very clear, musical
midrange, and open, clean highs. Bass response can be a little
less than theoretical ultimate, because I'll be listening to a lot
of vocal and light instrumental music, like soft rock (Simon and
Garf, CSNY, Janis Joplin, Joan Baez, Dylan), jazz, Indian classical,
etc.Thanks,
Tarun
