FET versus bipolar in MC input cascode

141.76.249.2

Hi there,
Last night we tested a rather simple phono preamp circuitry with the following configuration:

Cascoded MC input stage â€" passive riaa â€" output stage (OPA637)

The cascoded input stages comprised 2SK369 jFETs as lower transistors as well as upper transistors. The stages run at 5mA idle current with 2.5k drain resistors at +36V.

When we replaced the upper jFETs by a bipolar BC 547 transistor we were surprised by significant sonic improvement especially in definition and clarity in the bass.

Has anyone an explanation for this or is there any experience of other inmates ?

Thanks in advance
KlausB
