Hi Brian B, (I find the big-eyed beans from Venus sounding more poetic),
This morning I went to IKEA of Sweden to buy 20 Alkaline penlite (format AA) battery's (NON-rechargeable; made by Varta Germany). I made two strings of 10 and connected the midpoint to the ground of me preamp. Powering the line stage with initially +/- 16.2 V.
I immediately noticed a lack of bass slamm. Instruments were missing body (I am not talking about wine). I tried two configurations one with Walt Jung like superregulators between the battery's and the circuit; the other with a direct link from the battery's to the circuit; omitting all large caps and regulators. The latter sounded slightly more bright but again lacking bass slamm. I gave up after wild oscillations in the left channel (with the regulator in between).
For the next years I have enough battery's to power remote controls, walkmans and other gadgets!
