The only grounding scheme that works for DIY MC stepup transformer?

162.83.197.155

I tried a million variations, and here is the only grounding scheme that finally worked for my DIY MC step-up transformer stage. NO HUM.

Background: I put a pair of Audio Note step-up trannies in an aluminum project box between my new Benz L2 cartridge and my Rogue 66 tube pre, which only features a MM phono input. The tonearm is OL/RB-250. I drilled the box for two pairs of RCA jacks isolated from the chassis, as well as a grounding post connected to the chassis. I mounted the Audio Note cans on the chassis, isolating them with rubber washers. The transformer wires do not touch the chassis at any point.

The grounding post on the chassis turned out to be useless. Here is the only scheme that works, oddly enough:

• MC ground --> preamp grounding post
• Preamp grounding post --> two wires, one each to left and right RCA input jack, wedged between the plug and the jack on the outer (negative) shell.

Anyone have any input on why this might be so? Busybusy has indicated via email to me that Origin Live may have mixed up the tonearm chassis ground with the tonearm signal ground -- however I don't have the electrical knowledge to understand what he's talking about!

FYI, the turntable does not have a three-prong plug. The preamp does.

J!
