A variac is good to use, but an even more effective tool is to add a large lightbulb in SERIES with the power line. This way, if you have a BIG problem, then the lightbulb (150W or more) will limit the current. If there is no real problem, then the lightbulb will stay dim and have low resistance. I use a lightbulb and a variac at the same time, for most protection. Don't try any new design without one or both of these tools.
