Dear Mr. Kait,

Sorry to have to correct your statement, as it´s completely untrue. The refraction index of a medium affects to the speed of light inside it, compared to vacuum, where light travels at a constant speed of 300,000 km/sec. This change in speed is what makes possible the existence of lenses, and of prisms, by the use of which you can separate light of different wavelengths, but it doesn´t affect colour itself. The only known ways to alter colour of light are absorption by a complementary colour (thus, green glass would block red light, blue glass would block yellow light,...), absorption of photons by atoms that later radiate on a different wavelength (and, yes, quantum physics woul fit here) or by moving at tremendously high speed the source of light, relative to the observer (that´s a variety of Doppler effect, and is actually used to determine how far stars are from us, and to try to find how old the universe is).

A common image caused by changes in the refractive index of air is the one you can see when looking over a hot road in a summer day, when everything in the distance seems to be fluttering, and moving up and down. And an extreme case is a mirage, when you can see things really distant as closer than they are, due to mirroring between blocks of air at very different temperatures.

Best regards
