Yamaha B1

I think the B1 amplifier was their best. And most who have heard it say it sounded excellent. Problem is/was that it uses a now unobtainium power transistor, called a "VFET". There are modern descendents of the VFET, but I don't think they can be retro-fitted. If the outputs blow, the amplifier may become a doorstop. (On the other hand, I think I read recently that Nelson Pass has a gaggle of VFETs.)

For that reason, if you buy a working B1 that has not been serviced in recent years, probably you should first of all replace the electrolytic capacitors. Lytics have a finite life span and when failing can take out those irreplaceable output transistors.
