A good 'upgrade' is a power conditioner. Easy, no internal messing about.

I use cheap CD players.. I mean $40 used off eBay.
With those, I use a nice DAC. (I paid $250 for it ten years ago)

Along with a %5K preamp, $5K speakers.. 300 a pop cables.. $4K TT
(I do add in a $4K so called tube buffer which is actually a VAC Standard preamp.. LOL)
What I think I want to say is th good power conditioner makes my $40 scrap CD player sound almost as good as my Sony SCD777ES So much so I 'save' the Sony and use the cheap player ALL THE TIME. True the tube preamp has a place...

I am pretty fussy, and plenty of players sound like crap. Not every CD player will sound good just because you add a power conditioner.. But the good ones can sound much better with a conditioner.
Not that this is THE ANSWER.. Just one alternative.
