I used the LT317 in lieu of an LM317 in the context of an Allen Wright SuperRegulator, in my preamplifier PS. Later, AW himself told me it's not significantly better or even different from the LM317, except maybe for tolerance, as Awedeofile says. Further, AW came to believe that the LM317/LT317 is not very good sounding. There are better devices on the market now, but I am no expert. K&K Audio sells a very nice CCS/VR kit that is small but does take up more space than a simple LM317. If this is for use in a PS, you would benefit from using a CCS before the VR, so the K&K kit makes good sense, and sounds excellent. (I am using one now in place of the SuperRegulator.)
