RE: DIY Feet of Silence - questions

Holy smokes! Those ARE the things they sell at Mapleshade! What a markup!

My plans include constrained layer damping, using layers of different materials (a la Symposium shelves), so I'll be doing something similar to those bits. However, I also wanted to add a sprung suspension to the system, and the Feet Of Silence seem to be the most effective way to do so.

Here's my design:

The equipment rack's vertical uprights will be made up of layers of differing woods (Baltic birch ply and different species of hard woods) stacked. I may or may not include a threaded rod inside the whole length of each vertical upright, to compress the glued layers together more than gravity and glue alone can do.

At each shelf level, the shelf materials will be another set of layers in each vertical upright, except that those levels will extend into the shelves themselves. I suspect that I will use Baltic birch sandwiched between two layers of clear acrylic. Each shelf will be cut to a curved shape, to add rigidity; and it will have slits routed through it at multiple locations, to help break up standing waves.

Each shelf of the rack will support a floating shelf designed similarly to the Symposium shelves (foam core, mdf, and metal or acrylic). Each such floating shelf will be supported by the DIY Feet of Silence, and each Foot of Silence will incorporate a HipJoint rollerbearing. The equipment will rest on the floating shelves.

Ambitious, but it keeps me off the streets.

May the bridges we burn light our way....
