Upgraded PS for P-3A...Need Feedback.

207.225.89.26

I am planning to build an upgraded PS for my new P-3A. The stock PS is a cheap wall wart unit that appears to consist of a transfromer only in sealed plastic, rated to provide 9V AC and 2A. The rectification and filtering take place inside the DAC...not sure exactly why that was, but I will proceed as is for now.

I have ordered a toroidal transformer from Digikey rated for 9V AC and 2.75A. My intent is to simply install the new transformer in a prototype box, install a filtered IEC socket and ferrite beads on the secondary wires inside the box. I will install a shielded twisted pair wire, terminated in the appropriate female plug for connection to the DAC.

Now obviously, I will bench test the new PS vs. the stock one to make sure that I AM truly getting 9V AC just like the stock PS.

Question: Is a toroidal xformer a good choice for this app.? I also considered the Signal split bobbin transformers, but I couldn't find one that could be configured for 9V, so I settled for what I could find in the digikey catalog. For the $18 invested in the transformer, I figure it is a worthwhile venture. If it works out well, the total parts cost for the venture will not exceed $40.

My guess is that the transformer that they provide in the PS for the stock unit is inexpensive and thus keeps their price for the DAC down. I don't begrudge them that, it is a GREAT DAC.

Comments? Recommendations? Warnings? Any would be appreciated.

Take care,

Dan W.
