interesting threads on Tweaker's that mention the benefits of copper plating or lining a steel chassis . . .
Been meaning to do this one for a while and, in light of this thread, finally got round to it.
My two much-upgraded Quad 303 power maps have U-shaped steel covers. I fitted sound deadening sheet to the inside of the three panels making up each cover and covered it with self-adhesive copper sheet which I then grounded. Obviously, I kept clear of ventilation holes but the screening covers about 90 per cent of the panel, the damping slightly less.
I wasn't expecting much difference but I'm delighted to say that there was a marked improvement easily demonstrated in the reproduction of piano music - better tone, clearer sound (or, as we say in the trade, less clang, more oomph).
I can't say whether the change is down to the damping, to the screening or a combination of the two (and don't plan to find out . . .) but I can say that it's a tweak well worth the modest cost and effort involved. It and the BGT thingie have made two already very good amplifiers into right little beauties.
Where practicable, I thoroughly recommended trying it. Many thanks to all concerned for the tip.
