Well, the steel laminate will use much less wire, and that is a good thing. Iron cores get a bad rap these days, mainly from uninformed people parroting what they 'learn' on the internet. The truth is, an iron core can be designed so it does not saturate in use, and will be the best performer. The Erse iron cores (and other) perform very well. We took an Erse iron core (rated for 500 watts), and put 1kW through it in the lab, and it still did not saturate. And SET users pushing a whopping 10 watts shun them needlessly.
