I received two tube toppers yesterday. I've only tried them on a few songs but I am very favorably impressed. I first tried them on two 12AU7 tubes of my preamp. I used three of my "reference" "The Nazz are Blue" The Yardbirds, "The Way I Feel Inside" a mostly acapella recording by The Zombies, and "He's Dead" a live recording by Suede. I noticed better separation between instruments, a more 3D sound stage, darker background and more decay in the notes. All of this was in the midrange and upper midrange. I found no difference in the bass, if anything the bass might have been slightly repressed.
I next switched them to
the two 12AX7 tubes. All I can say is Wow! All the improvements of above plus the bass was there in spades. The end of "He's Dead" put a chill in me.
I took the tube toppers off and played all the songs. My system is pretty well developed and I think it sounds excellent. Even so, without the toppers it sounded a little bland. My wife was in the other room and after the 12AX7 experiment she came in to say how great it sounded. And she must be sick to death of these particular songs. I definitely think this tweak is worth a try.
