As materials have changed- both what we know, and what is available- in conjunction with how we apply the materials, the need for specification that are clear has become paramount-
Temperature specs are quite important when designing for industrial applications and military applications-
In a former career life I was involved in design/manufacture and sale of Fuel Metering valves for aero-derivative turbines - the locations for some of these units varied considerably- from Siberia (Gazprom Pipeline, -70C) to Platforms in the Gulf of Mexico (PeMex, >35C) -
having the correct components was crucial both from a MTBF perspective and a safety , not to mention marketplace acceptance.
With Audio, we do not usually run into such extremes, so we can save some money if we know the parameters and choose / install accordingly.
Lastly, Metal Oxide resistors do tend to have a smaller form factor than resistors of equivalent Ohm value made from Carbon Comp.
and it is the heat dissipation that is crucial for a resistor to maintain its rated value in a circuit.
I hope that this helps-
