Questions about size of resistor ?

I have recently got some resistors from Digikey. They are 0.5W and 1W.

The size of these 0.5W resistor looks like 0.25W from the old days. And the size of these 1w resistor looks like 0.5W from the old days.

Has the technology improved that these new resistor are so small or are they simply marked with different scales ?

One thing I notice is that these new 0.5W resistor was rated at 25C degrees . I just wonder it is common that resistor will work at temp above 25C. So 0.5W at 25C is simply not telling the whole story.

Any thoughts?
Alan
