I strongly recommend powder coating any metal parts (chassis/cases) being considered for repainting. I am not sure what is done in preparation. I have just taken the "metal parts" to the paint shop, picked a color, and returned a day or two to pick up the part(s). The finish is not only flawless in my opinion, but very durable.
I have used, Macco, an automotive after market paint shop for my parts. They did the work including prep work (dealing with rust and uneven finish). I found the price to be reasonable.
I would think automotive paint shops would be the first place I would look for a powder coat operation.
