RE: Vintage speaker driver coil "sag"?

I live in Hawaii so the ocean is a potent factor in longevity of everything. The foam is semi porous and thus moisture will enter the cell structure. Once there it sustains mildew and mold and cause the cell walls to deteriorate.

This from a report from Boston Acoustic drivers which never made it through warranty and were sent back to the factory for analysis. In regions where there are true four seasons ( i.e. winter and snow), the extreme cold will inhibit mildew growth.

As for modifying speaker parameters, the aging process itself, if you accept the mildew explanation, will also alter the parameters negatively.

As another approach, you can take anti fungal foot powder and dust the surrounds, again to inhibit their growth. Just be sure to play something with big bass before replacing the grills.
